Germany Invades Poland

Germany Invades Poland

On September 1st, Hitler's army forces crossed onto Polish soil via land and air in an effort to conquer the sovereign nation forcing British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain to officially declare the United Kingdom to be at war with Germany. Hitler's forces used a combination of fast-moving armor and airborne tactics to put the hapless Poles into full retreat. This method of warfare has been dubbed Blitzkrieg - or "Lightning War" due to its highly-effective coordinated attacks via land and air. To add insult to injury, the Soviet Union, apparently in cahoots with the Germans, launched an East side attack of their own in hopes of dividing the spoils when all was said an done. The world now watches and awaits the outcome of these brazen events in Europe.

Battle of El Alamein

Turning Point at El Alamein!

Our forces in North Africa, fresh off of their landings in Operation Torch, have levels a major defeat against German General Erwin Rommel and his fabled Afrika Corps. Led by Monty, our boys took the fight to the Germans after holding the line near El Alamein. As of this writing, the Axis forces are in full retreat and the north of Africa has been secured from future German dominance in the region. Next stop - Europe!

A REAL PERSPECTIVE OF HISTORY

What SecondWorldWarHistory.com does is offer a concise look into the significant and seemingly no-so-significant events that made up this global conflict. Events are offered up in consecutive order by day, date and war year as they happened. What this offers the reader is a better sense for what the world was going through in this period of history - to think that just yesterday, you may have been trying to stay awake in church while 66 years ago yesterday, your grandfather was fighting for his life on the beaches of Normandy. Now that's perspective!
